When you live in an apartment, choosing the right composting method is critical. The two best low-odor, small-space options are Worm Farming (Vermicomposting) and Bokashi.
Worms eat food scraps and turn them into rich soil. Pros: Creates actual soil, very low maintenance. Cons: Cannot process meat or dairy, worms need temperature regulation on a balcony.
Bokashi uses fermentation in a sealed bucket. Pros: Takes all food types (including meat/dairy), zero smell when sealed. Cons: Produces fermented pre-compost that must be buried in soil to finish breaking down.
