Australia Family Trip — 8 Days, Melbourne → Great Ocean Road → Sydney

Read me first — what this plan is and isn't

This is a research-grade draft, not a booked itinerary. Every price, phone number, vendor, flight number, and address in this document is a working assumption I (and the model passes that helped me revise it) could not live-verify. The Avalon departure board, the Avis one-way fee, the Puffing Billy winter timetable, and Meriton Suites' exact August rates all change. Items tagged [verify-before-booking] are the ones that need a 2-minute live check before you pay a deposit.

What you can trust: the route shape (3 nights Melbourne → 1 night Apollo Bay → 1 night Warrnambool → 2 nights Sydney), the museum shortlist, the GOR highlights, the family pacing logic, the day-by-day structure, and the cost order-of-magnitude (likely AUD 6,500–7,500 for the family of 4 in winter 2026, depending on the actual hotel and flight buckets you book).

What you must recheck: hotel room configurations for 4, winter opening hours, Day-of-week alignment for Queen Vic Market, and Day 6 flight timing relative to the actual Avalon schedule on your travel date.

One thing to settle first: travel dates. Most of the "is this bookable" friction comes from the plan being date-agnostic. Once you have dates, work top-down: hotels → flight → car → Puffing Billy → restaurants. That order matters because Avalon car-rental inventory and Jetstar fare buckets tighten in winter school holidays.

TL;DR: Keep the trip structure from v2, but book it now as a specific chain: Quest NewQuay Docklands [verify-before-booking] → Seafarers Getaway Apollo Bay [verify-before-booking] → Deep Blue Hotel & Hot Springs Warrnambool [verify-before-booking] → Meriton Suites Campbell Street Sydney [verify-before-booking]; book Avis Melbourne City → Avalon Airport one-way SUV with zero-excess cover [verify-before-booking]; protect Day 6 by aiming for Jetstar JQ610 AVV→SYD at 16:40 [verify-before-booking] and treating anything earlier as too brittle; reserve Puffing Billy, Healesville, Tipo 00, and Sydney hotel/flight first [verify-before-booking]; and use the v3 checklist and daily line-item budget below as the actual booking sheet rather than the rougher estimates later in the draft.

v3 scope note: this addendum closes only the 3 remaining blockers. The day-by-day plan below is still v2. Where the older draft names multiple options, use the v3 concrete picks below as the live booking choices.

Rule for Kelvin + wife: this table is the actual shortlist. If a place below is marked “walk-in OK”, it still has a live URL/phone so you can decide quickly. All contacts and rates need a quick live recheck [verify-before-booking].

Trip total from exact v3 picks

Reconciled to the per-day line items above. Earlier version under-stated by 134; corrected here.

Scenario Family total (AUD) Per person (AUD) Notes
Core v3 total 6,641 1,660.25 Uses exact v3 hotels, Avis one-way setup, Jetstar baggage allowance, and skips Day 3 Healesville, Day 5 Flagstaff, and Day 8 Featherdale [verify-before-booking]
Fuller v3 total 6,983 1,745.75 Adds Healesville, Flagstaff Hill, and Featherdale [verify-before-booking]
Plush headroom ~7,500 ~1,875 Reserve in case: hotel rate bumps in school holidays, a hot-spring upgrade at Deep Blue, a Quay-level Sydney splurge dinner, or an unplanned Taronga ferry add-on.

Stated v1 estimate in the original draft was AUD 5,800. The v3 number is higher (~AUD 6,600–7,000) because v1 understated Sydney winter hotel rates, Avalon flight baggage, and the car-rental zero-excess cover. The v1 number was realistic only if you picked hostels and minimal insurance; v3 reflects a mid-luxe 4-star-with-kids posture.

Travellers: 2 adults + 13-year-old daughter + 11-year-old son
Season: Australian winter (June–August). Pack warm layers, waterproofs, and a small umbrella. Coastal windchill on the GOR can run well below forecast. Sunsets are around 17:00–17:15.
Currency: AUD. 1 AUD ≈ 0.65 USD / 0.88 SGD at 2026 rates.
Style: Mid-luxe, family of 4, two hotel rooms or 1 two-bedroom apartment per stay.
Vibe brief: Nature + culture + out-of-the-norm. Art museums are priority. Family pace should feel real, not heroic.
Disclaimer: Opening hours, prices, one-way rental policies, and domestic bag fees should be rechecked in the week before travel. If a detail is not verified yet, it is marked [verify-before-booking]. The [verify-before-booking] tag means: a 2-minute live check on the operator's site will either confirm it or surface a correction. It does not mean the number is wrong — it means I cannot prove it right without live access to that vendor's booking system.

Verification loop note (process, not trip content): Kelvin asked for a /skill:paseo-loop with the model xiaomi-token-plan-sgp/mimo-v2.5-pro. That provider is not installed on this Paseo instance (configured providers: claude, codex, copilot, opencode, pi, omp — and all of claude/codex/copilot/opencode/omp are currently disabled in the daemon config). I ran three iteration passes on the closest working model (piopenai-codex/gpt-5.4): pass 1 produced 15 audit findings, pass 2 closed 11 of them, pass 3 closed the structural Avalon/flight chain. Final score after pass 3: completeness 6/10, family-friendliness 7/10 — i.e. the structure is solid but the model can only get you so far without live booking-system access. The loop was stopped at 3 iterations to avoid unverified specific-number drift.

Two itinerary variants

Variant A — current MEL → GOR → fly → SYD
This is still the better 8-day structure if Sydney art time matters. It keeps the Great Ocean Road as a contained 3-day west-of-Melbourne loop, then resets with a domestic flight so the family gets two proper Sydney days instead of turning the second half into a recovery drive. Total driving is roughly 650–750 km over 3 road days, plus 1 domestic flight.

Variant B — GOR + inland drive to Sydney via Canberra
This only makes sense if the family actively wants a longer Australian road trip and is willing to give up one Sydney day. The cleaner version is Warrnambool/Apollo Bay → overnight inland (likely around Albury or Canberra) → Canberra museum stop → Sydney. It is simpler than juggling a regional car return plus Avalon flight, but it adds a lot more seat time. Total driving is roughly 1,450–1,650 km over 5 road days, no domestic flight. For this brief, Variant A remains recommended.

High-level plan

Day City Theme Sleep
1 Arrive Melbourne Soft landing, no heroics Melbourne CBD
2 Melbourne Art + culture day Melbourne CBD
3 Day trip from Melbourne Puffing Billy + one wildlife stop, with a genuine early finish Melbourne CBD
4 GOR Day 1 Melbourne → Torquay → Lorne → Apollo Bay Apollo Bay
5 GOR Day 2 Twelve Apostles + Shipwreck Coast, keep Warrnambool evening light Warrnambool
6 GOR Day 3 Tower Hill / Port Fairy light touch, then return and fly to Sydney Sydney CBD
7 Sydney Art museums + harbour Sydney CBD
8 Sydney Coast or rainy-day city swap, evening flight home (in transit)

Total: 8 days, 7 nights. 3 nights Melbourne, 1 night Apollo Bay, 1 night Warrnambool, 2 nights Sydney. Driving 3 days. One domestic flight MEL/AVV → SYD.

Why fly instead of drive onward to Sydney? Because the Great Ocean Road is west of Melbourne, not on the way to Sydney. For an 8-day family trip, trying to convert it into a through-drive usually steals the Sydney museum time and turns the second half into fatigue management.

Day 1 — fixed: Docklands arrival night, realistic first-evening movement

Flights & arrival

Check-in

Afternoon / evening (gentle)

Contingency / rainy-day swaps

Day 1 cost (estimate, AUD)

Day 2 — fixed: art-first Melbourne day, corrected NGV/Fed Square logic, Queen Vic left date-dependent

Breakfast

Morning — NGV International (top priority)

Midday — Federation Square area

Afternoon — one more museum, not three hard stops

Late afternoon / evening

Contingency / rainy-day swaps

Day 2 cost

Day 3 — fixed: gentler day-trip pacing; Healesville is now conditional, not compulsory

Pacing fix: this day now has one hard anchor (Puffing Billy) and one optional second anchor (Healesville Sanctuary). If the family slept badly or Melbourne weather is grim, do not try to force both plus scenic extras.

Drive out / tour option

Morning — Puffing Billy Railway

Lunch

Afternoon — choose one of two versions

Drive back

Contingency / rainy-day swaps

Day 3 cost

Lower-energy version: skip Healesville and save roughly AUD 105–140 plus an hour of extra driving.

Day 4 — fixed: one-way rental assumptions softened; first GOR day kept scenic, not crammed

Logistics fix: do not assume Geelong drop-off is simple. Before locking the route, verify three things with the actual vendor: (1) one-way fee, (2) whether Avalon Airport drop-off is allowed, and (3) depot opening hours on your travel date.

Car rental — pick up in Melbourne

Drive plan

Apollo Bay stay

Contingency / rainy-day swaps

Day 4 cost

Day 5 — fixed: headline coast day, but Warrnambool evening is now lighter

Pacing fix: v1 stacked the Apostles, multiple viewpoints, whales, and a ticketed evening show. In v2, the coast is still the main event, but the evening is intentionally softer.

Morning — Twelve Apostles / Shipwreck Coast

Lunch

Afternoon

Evening

Contingency / rainy-day swaps

Day 5 cost

Day 6 — fixed: Avalon chain is the real risk point; feasible only with the right drop-off setup and flight window

Critical fix: the clean version of this day is Warrnambool/Port Fairy side → direct car drop at Avalon Airport → flight to Sydney.
If that is not available and you must do Geelong depot drop + separate transfer to Avalon, book a late-afternoon or early-evening flight only. A flight earlier than about 17:00 makes the day brittle.

Morning

Return to Avalon / Geelong

Flight guidance

Sydney arrival

Contingency / rainy-day swaps

Day 6 cost

Day 7 — fixed: Sydney art day protected; harbour extras kept optional

Breakfast

Morning — Art Gallery of NSW

Lunch

Afternoon — MCA + one neighbourhood add-on

Dinner

Contingency / rainy-day swaps

Day 7 cost

Day 8 — fixed: choose coast OR wildlife OR city; do not force all three before an evening flight

Pacing fix: v1 effectively tried to fit a coastal walk, wildlife park, farewell dinner, packing, and airport transfer into one day. In v2, Day 8 has two usable versions.

Option 1 — Good weather version

Option 2 — Lower-energy / city version

Farewell dinner

Airport

Contingency / rainy-day swaps

Day 8 cost

Trip totals

Item AUD
Car rental (3 days incl. insurance + plausible one-way fee) 540
Petrol + parking + tolls 220
Domestic flight AVV/MEL → SYD (4 pax incl. basic checked baggage) 760
Accommodation 7 nights (3 Mel + 1 Apollo + 1 Warrnambool + 2 Syd) 2,440
Food + coffees + snacks 1,190
Attractions & admissions 430
Local transport (SkyBus, trams, airport rail, short taxis) 270
Surprises / weather / baggage / small over-runs buffer 390
Estimated total 6,240

This is a more credible mid-luxe number for a family of 4 in winter with apartments, a 3-day road segment, museums, and one domestic flight.

Out-of-the-norm checklist (where this plan goes off the obvious)

Family logistics: kids, tiredness, and what is still unresolved

Pre-trip bookings (deadlines)

Item Book by
Puffing Billy 2+ weeks out
Healesville Sanctuary / tour if using one 1–2 weeks out
Car rental with exact one-way / airport-drop terms As early as possible
Domestic flight 2–4 weeks out
Sydney hotels 3–4 weeks out
Any special dinner worth caring about 2–3 weeks out
Ticketed art exhibitions When dates are live

Open questions / confirm before booking

  1. Exact travel dates — needed for Queen Victoria Market logic, winter daylight, and any Night Market call.
  2. Actual arrival and departure flight times — this materially changes Day 1 and Day 8.
  3. Whether Avalon Airport drop-off is available with the chosen rental vendor — this is the key Day 6 decision.
  4. Checked baggage needs on the domestic flight — v2 cost includes a basic allowance, but exact airline rules are TBC.
  5. Dietary needs — restaurants can be adjusted once known.
  6. Walking tolerance — especially for the coast, cliff paths, and whether a partial Bondi walk is the better call.
  7. Budget ceiling — current plan is credible mid-luxe, not lean.

Changes in v2

  1. Pacing too aggressive → Days 3, 5, 6, and 8 now have explicit cut points and fewer mandatory stops.
  2. Fatigue risk understated → the plan now says plainly that 3 driving days + 1 flight + hotel changes are tiring, and reduces “same-day stack” pressure.
  3. Brittle timing chainsDay 6 is rewritten around the transport constraint and only works cleanly with an airport drop or a later flight.
  4. Shaky transport assumptions → Geelong drop-off, one-way fees, depot hours, and Avalon transfer are now marked TBC until vendor confirmed.
  5. Unreliable geography / travel times → fixed examples include Port Fairy distance/time and more conservative coast-drive timings.
  6. Soft vs hard recommendations inconsistent → the language now matches the plan: hard anchors are limited; optional stops are labelled as optional.
  7. Probable factual movement errorsDay 1 now corrects the Docklands/Southern Cross → Hosier Lane walking assumption.
  8. Weak / imprecise venue referencesDay 2 now correctly places NGV International on St Kilda Road, not at Federation Square.
  9. Opening-hours logic inconsistentQueen Victoria Market is no longer embedded as a fixed stop without trip dates.
  10. Costing not fully credible → food, baggage, snacks, parking, tolls, and transfer costs are increased and surfaced.
  11. Petrol / driving costs too light → fuel is separated and lifted; parking and tolls are also included.
  12. Accommodation guidance weak → recommendations now focus on room configuration, heating, laundry, parking, and exact fit, with named properties treated as examples only.
  13. Wildlife / art balance off-brief → museum priority is protected on Day 2 and Day 7, and wildlife stops are made more conditional.
  14. Weather contingency too thin → every outdoor-heavy day now has a Contingency / rainy-day swaps subsection.
  15. Too many unresolved trip-shaping items → the open questions section is retained and tightened around the decisions that actually change structure.
