A scannable founder playbook: what the cliff is, why it kills inbound and AI shortlists,
how to spot one in two minutes, five public patterns, DIY fix vs when to hire a 72h removal.
Public sources · ~2026-10-19 Asia/Macau. Re-check live pricing pages before quoting.
Your public pricing page shows Free / Starter / Pro with clear list prices —
then the money tier says Contact sales, Custom,
Talk to sales, or Book a demo with
no public dollar number.
That gap is the cliff. Humans can still book a call. Agents, chatbots, comparison
scrapers, and self-serve mid-market often cannot. The last parseable tier becomes
the “ceiling” in shortlists even when real ACV sits one step higher.
One-line test
If a buyer (or an agent) cannot answer “what does the top plan cost?” from the
public page alone, you have a Contact-Sales cliff.
2. Why it kills inbound + chatbot / AI shortlists
Inbound bounce: Mid-market visitors who need SSO / SLA / admin controls see “Contact sales” and leave instead of starting a trial or email.
Sales lag: Every opaque tier becomes a calendar dependency. Pipeline slows; tire-kickers clog the calendar.
Agent / AI shortlists: Scrapers and LLM tools keep only numeric list prices. Custom / Contact sales → dropped or mis-ranked under the last self-serve tier.
Chatbot answers: “What’s Enterprise?” → “Talk to sales.” That answer loses the shortlist to a rival with a published floor.
Partner / marketplace feeds: Feeds that require a price field skip you or invent a wrong number from your Pro tier.
Founder signal
Soft traffic and “we love the product but couldn’t price it” replies usually mean the cliff is doing work you don’t want — not that demand is missing.
3. How to spot one in 2 minutes (checklist)
Open your public /pricing (or competitor’s). Tick these:
At least one plan CTA is Contact sales / Custom / Book demo / Talk to sales
That plan has no dollar amount, floor, or “from $X” on the card
Features that matter for B2B (SSO, SCIM, SLA, audit, dedicated support) only appear on that opaque tier
Self-serve stops one tier early relative to who you actually sell
An agent pasting the page HTML into a shortlist would stop at the last numeric price
Your own sales deck or proposal uses numbers that never appear on the public page
3+ checks → cliff. Map the exact line with the free
Cliff Finder
(paste page text → plan table + “Money sits at ___ because ___”).
Self-serve Free → Teams with seat prices. Enterprise = Talk to sales. Floor (~$15k/yr, ~50 seats) sometimes published — still a sales CTA, so agents that only keep self-serve list prices may drop it.
Contact sales · Custom Linear
Clear Free / Basic / Business ladder. Enterprise = Contact sales / Custom, annual only. No public dollar floor — high opacity for scrapers.
Contact sales · Custom Vercel
Hobby / Pro list-priced. Enterprise = Contact Sales for SLAs, SCIM, multi-region. Agents comparing “$/mo” shortlist Pro and treat Enterprise as opaque.
Contact sales · Custom Notion
Free / Plus / Business list-priced. Enterprise = Contact Sales. Agents often stop at Business as the last parseable tier.
Contact sales · From N seats Miro
Free / Starter / Business self-serve. Enterprise = Custom from ~30 members + Contact sales. Member floor without a dollar number still fails numeric shortlists.
The shared pattern
List prices end one tier early. Contact sales / Custom is the money cliff for
compliance, SSO, SLA, and org-scale. Humans book a call; agents bounce.
5. DIY fix outline vs when to hire a 72h removal
DIY When you can fix it this week
Paste pricing HTML into Cliff Finder — get the cliff line in writing.
Pick one: publish a floor (“Enterprise from $X/yr”) while keeping Contact sales, split a self-serve Business tier between Pro and Enterprise, or move one gate (e.g. SSO lite) down so mid-market can buy.
Add one outcome line above the fold (what Enterprise unlocks in plain English).
Ship an agent-readable plan card (name · price or floor · 3 bullets · CTA) somewhere scrapeable.
Re-run the 2-minute checklist on staging before go-live.
DIY works when the wall is mostly packaging/copy and sales already honors a known floor.
